The bathroom has become an environment for disposability, so I sought to combat that, starting with the razor.

PROCESS

Considering the impacts of shaving and the conveniences and costs expected of consumers, I began exploring solutions and form factors.

WHY IT’S BETTER

Graze is a sustainable razor for the modern lifestyle. It allows the user to replace only a stainless steel blade rather than a co-molded cartridge. It doesn’t require the user to change their shaving habits as other sustainable options, such as straight razors and double-edged safety razors, do. It is also made fully of recyclable materials that can be easily disassembled at the end of its life.

1a/b Polypropylene front flap/head clips closed on the head around the blade. The blade dispenser is used to open the flap.

2 Stainless steel blade fits into the head. It is punched out of a single sheet and then sharpened, saving the energy of spot-welding that is used on current blades.

3 Polypropylene handle shank attaches to the head and provides the spring for the pivot. The shank is hollow and threaded at the bottom to accomodate the weight bar and thumb screw. It is also square to prevent the handle from twisting. This uses far less plastic than the typical razor.

4 Cork handle slides onto the handle shank and is held on with the thumb screw. Cork is a natural, compostable material the can be sustainably sourced in Europe. It is antimicrobial and waterproof, and still provides the cushioning that an elastomer would usually provide in a razor handle. This part would be compression molded.

5 Steel weight bar slides into the handle shank and is held on with the thumb screw. This thin extruded bar gives the handle better weight distribution and balance.

6 Steel thumb screw threads into the handle shank and holds the various parts of the handle together. It assists the weight bar in providing better balance and weight distribution. This knurled screw allows the user to easily disassemble and properly dispose of and recycle the various parts of the razor.
