IT STARTED WITH TREAD

In 2015, Leatherman released the Tread: a wrist-worn wearable tool. The Tread somewhat created its own category, but that category didn’t appeal to everybody. Many didn’t want to wear a watch-sized wearable tool without it having a watch.

The challenge then became: how might we create a timepiece for the Tread the appeals to current and future Tread users? And how might we design it to be cohesive with the existing product and true to the Leatherman brand?

TARGET CONSUMER

In order to design the watch, we would need to define and empathize with a consumer to arrive at our approach.

That consumer ended up being the site boss. He is highly skilled in trades but has worked his way up to a managerial role. He values quality, functionality, and indicators of status.
