WHAT IS LAPAROSCOPY?

Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive surgery performed through multiple small incisions in the abdomen. One incision is used for the laparoscope, a long tool with a small camera at the end, while the others are used for instruments. Surgeons rely on the images transmitted to a screen to perform these procedures.

WHY REDESIGN A LAPAROSCOPE?

Current laparoscopic instruments are made for larger, male hands. This becomes a problem especially in the Obstetrics and Gynecology field, which uses this equipment regularly, as most of the doctors are female. In addition, these instruments force surgeons’ wrists into uncomfortable positions.

PROCESS

To conduct research, I worked with a doctor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was able to provide with a training kit and instruments to understand how it feels to use them. I was also able to scrub in and observe a procedure in person, which allowed me to see what happens over the course of the procedure from setup to removal of masses. As I went through the development process, I got feedback from her and other doctors in the practice.
